Hey guys- question:
pg. 221- bite wounds- 1st ed. book-
It says bite wounds will result in the character getting +1 viral at 10% per point of damage inflicted with the bite.
What does that mean? My guess is that its a modifier to the bite resist check? like if you had a 50% bite resist and had taken 2 points of damage- you would then have a 30% resist? Is that right?
There is a 10% chance per point of damage taken that you will get infected and have to start consulting the yummy viral chart. For example, if you take 5 points of damage from a bite then there's a 50% chance you will get infected. If you take 10 points of damage you will most certainly take viral damage as 10 points of damage equates to a 100% chance of infection.

So does this relate to the bite resist check or is it for a different check? Sorry for confusion but for some reason this is "blowing my mind" ...at the moment I can't wrap my brain around it. Could I get maybe an example of its use ? Is this something different than the bite resist to resist being infected?
thanks B-
It's not a modifier to BR%, it's your last saving grace that the wound you get from a zombie is a superficial one and will not infect you... but taking a lot of damage will make that less likely. If you pass a BR%, viral is irrelevant regardless of how much damage you take, so making that final check is no longer necessary. Whichever comes first is not important, but it makes more sense to roll a BR% last AFTER you determine whether or not the wound is an infectious bite.
First thing, bite resist does NOT have any direct effect on your chance of catching the virus. What bite resist does do is keep you from taking Bite damage and instead taking Bludgeoning or Impact damage. Only Bite damage can spread the zombie virus.
Example man to the rescue!
Example #1: The OM-NOMING
First, if the zombies get a successful grapple against you Determine where the zombies are trying to bite you (usually the hands/fingers or arms) by rolling a d10 and consulting the bite location table on your character sheet. Then see what your bite resist is in the location they are trying to bite you. For this example we'll say your bite resistance is 15% (number pulled from lower regions). You roll a d100 for your bite resist check and score a 74, epicly failing your bite resist check since you want to roll low and not high! Now not only are you taking Bite damage rather than Bludgeoning damage (teeth are sharp like that) but you may also contract the zombie virus!
We'll say the zombies beat you by 5 degrees of success so they roll 5d6 damage against you and get a total of 13 (another number pulled from my lower regions) damage. Now we apply that damage to your defense in the bitten location, we'll say it's a 5. So now 13(damage) - 5(defense) = 8. You have now taken 8 points of damage. 8 (damage taken) X 10% (% chance per point of damage taken to contract virus) = 80%. So there is an 80% chance that you will contract the zombie virus from your bite wound. The GM rolls his/her d100 and doesn't tell you what the result is because he/she wants you to suffer. However, from his/her maniacle laughter you get the feeling he/she rolled a 26 (below 80) and so you've contracted the virus!
Example #2: Just a Little Nip
Same situation as above but this time the zombie only gets 1 degree of success and rolls 4 damage, not even enough to beat your defense. However, you will always take 1 damage from a zombie attack so you take your one point of damage and the GM rolls to see if you've caught the virus. You have a 10% chance of contracting the virus; 1 (point of damage) X 10% (chance per point to catch virus). The GM rolls a 32 (above 10) and you avoid catching the zombie virus.... THIS TIME!
Example #3: Neener Neener!
Same situation as Example #1 but you roll a 12 on your bite resist check. This means that the zombie likely got more clothing in its mouth than flesh or that it simply didn't really get a good bite on your and instead just beat on you a bit. Assuming you took the same amount of damage as in Example #1 (8 damage after defense) you would still mark down the damage on your sheet but there would be no need for the GM to roll and see if you've contracted the virus since the zombies teeth never actually got to sink into your flesh.
Hope this helps to clear things up!

This really helped! I've been playing with myself since I can't find people to play with me frequently. I'll have to double-check how I calculate these things from now on.
Practice makes perfect :D
