As this is a simulation and to throw a bit of randomness into the Encounter when you roll for zombies would it be unrealistic to throw a direction for the zombies appear from rather than the GM arbitrarily placing them?
For instance rolling D12, and saying the zombies come from 12 o'clock of your position, 6 o'clock etc based on the D12 roll.
GM doesn't necessarily have to follow through if the group is struggling but just wondered?
There are rules for placement of Zombies, but it really is up to the GM. Currently it is determined based on a D100 as outlined on pg 144 of the PDF. They are assumed to be all around the players as they are attracted towards the noise and either 'waking up' or coming from 'off screen' so to speak on the map.
However, I like the creativity of your encounters with directions. I think it could be fun, especially if you want to prevent your players from running (as if there is no clear exit, they cannot run).
I'm personally not a fan of the D12, but it seems to work perfectly with cardinal directions! Never thought of that!
