Supernatural Wierdness that goes on during a zombie apocalypse

I was thinking of having some wierd supernatural events occur during my zombie apocalypse which brings players to think beyond "it's a virus" and without going into the whole "its just the devil" aspect.

Here were some thoughts:
* All the escalators and elevators still work (even after the power is dead)
* The exit signs in buildings never burn out (even after the power is dead)
* The zombies cause "taint" to the land. Even the plants around them look sickly.
* Some zombies stay fresh, others wither up and become less virulent as they age; some actually starve - no standard should keep them on their feet.
* Maggots turn red after eating certain zombies and die
* Sewer steam continues to rise from manhole covers, even after boiler systems have burned out.

etc.

There are a couple of sources that have a less-than-supernatural way to describe some of those things. The taint you mention can be the virus jumping species and killing plant life and animals as well. The freshness thing can be that certain strains fight off decomposition. That's kind of the reality presented in the Zombie Survival Handbook.

The maggots thing is really unsettling, for some reason :P

Technically, all one would need for red maggots would either be a reaction of maggot enzymes, possibly corrupted, or the disease itself taking over the body and producing something to the point of killing the maggot (such little bodies!) or a product which is ultimately lethal to the maggot.

For all we know, the whole issue may stem from a prevention of clotting mechanism or some such, depending on the maggot type, especially if it was feeding on something with iron content which turns a red-ish shade given a source of oxidation (think rust). Hope that isn't too complex...

Some zombies don't attack you, don't try to eat you. They just watch. They watch you and they whisper things in their raspy, breathless voices. Few venture close enough to hear what they are saying, and those that do tell of the zombies whispering senseless jumbles of words.

Some poor souls recognized the voices as belonging to friends and loved ones they know were eaten.

Just what are the zombies eating?
